Curtain Types

From Cycloramas to Borders - there are a few unique terms you may not be familiar with.

Stage Direction

Stage directions are always from the point of view of the actor standing on the stage and facing the audience. So stage-left would be to the actor's left hand side. From an audience members view, Stage-Left is to the right. Between Stage Left and Stage Right is referred to as Centre Stage.

Up-Stage isn't about being a better performer, it refers to the days when most stages were raked (sloped towards the audience to aid visibility for the audience, modern theatres are built with raked seating instead). Therefore Up-Stage would be the top of the rake, or further away from the audience. Down-Stage is nearer the audience. Between the two is referred to Mid-Stage.
